BankID is Sweden’s largest eID and a natural part of our everyday lives. It is now announced that BankID will take part in the first phase of the work on the European Identity Wallet – the EUDI Wallet.

– BankID has sound expertise in security and technology and, as experts in digital identity, we will participate in the extensive work being carried out on the EU Digital Identity Wallet. BankID will take part in two large-scale pilot projects in which our 20 years’ experience in digital identity will be extremely useful, says Kaisa Fexe, Head of Marketing and Business, BankID.

The EUDI Wallet makes it possible to introduce a uniform European digital identity system that will be available to any EU resident who wishes to identify him or herself or prove certain personal data in a range of e-services both online and offline for both public and private services throughout the EU.

Two consortia implementing pilot projects

BankID is participating in two consortia, EUDI Wallet Consortium (EWC) and Digital Credentials for Europe (DC4EU), which are each implementing a pilot project for the EU Digital Identity Wallet. The aim is to guarantee use cases, security and interoperability in the future development of the European Digital Identity Wallet.

EUDI Wallet Consortium (EWC)

EWC is led by Swedish and Finnish government authorities and is supported by relevant industry experts from the travel and payments industries as well as a large number of technology partners with experience in digital identity, trust services, wallet applications and the integration of these technologies into online services. The focus is to provide passenger information, purchases of goods and services and interactions between companies. Payments and digital identities for companies and organisations are also included. EWC consists of organisations representing all 27 EU Member States.

Digital Credentials for Europe (DC4EU)

DC4EU focuses on the EUDI Wallet linked to education and social security, including certificates linked to education, professional qualifications and the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). DC4EU consists of private and public organisations from 23 countries (21 within the EU as well as Norway and Ukraine).

The Swedish open model

DIGG has recommended a Swedish open model for the EUDI Wallet, which means that both private and public operators may be issuers of digital identity wallets. BankID’s and DIGG’s roles in these two consortia are as follows:

  1. Digital identity wallet issuer.

  2. Issuer of PID (Personal Identifiable Data), which is when the end user’s identity is linked to the identity wallet and allows more attributes to be stored in it.
