2023-10-26

1 million users have activated a digital ID card from BankID since it was launched 5 months ago and that figure is increasing by 1000s of people every day.

En miljon användare har aktiverat digitalt ID-kort från BankID..

Digital ID documents are the future and BankID is once again leading the way by offering a safe, secure way of identifying yourself, including in physical environments.

“We’ll be seeing more digital ID documents in the future and the fact that a million users have already activated a digital ID card from BankID in the past 5 five months shows that more and more people want to leave their wallets at home. The digital ID card is based on the same secure foundation as identification and signature with BankID, but has now been adapted for physical environments,” says Petter Dahl, e-id expert at BankID.

More and more companies are accepting digital ID cards

More and more companies are accepting digital ID cards from BankID, including Apoteksgruppen, Kronans Apotek, DHL, SJ, OKQ8 and Postnord. For many companies, validating the digital ID card manually and visually is the easiest way and equates to validating a physical ID document. Security is also increased with a number of security features such as a range of sounds and visual effects. Businesses can also choose to scan the animated QR code when validating the digital ID card. This can be done with the store’s own scanner or with another BankID app.

“The digital ID card is here to stay and there is a great deal of interest in accepting digital ID cards from our members in Svensk Handel. More and more consumers want to leave their wallet at home and people will expect to be able to use their digital ID card everywhere in the near future. Training and spreading knowledge on the correct way for businesses to validate digital ID documents is the way forward. It’s good to see that a lot of companies are already up and running,” says Nina Jelver, Head of Security at Svensk Handel.

Safe and secure

A physical ID document issued by the police is required when activating the digital ID card for the first time. Checks to ensure that the physical ID document is genuine and valid are also carried out on activation. The photo taken at the police station in a controlled environment is used for the digital ID card and can’t be replaced. The holder identifies themselves using their BankID every time the digital ID card is to be shown. In addition to the usual information, such as the person’s name, age, personal identity number and photograph, the digital ID card also has a number of security features that make the card easy to validate securely.

“The digital ID card is more secure than a physical ID card. Thanks to the built-in security, it’s harder to falsify and it’s therefore harder for criminals to use in order to steal someone else’s identity. I’d like to see more companies accepting digital ID cards and more private individuals activating and using them,” says Jan Olsson, Detective Chief Inspector at the Swedish Cybercrime Centre.
