Service status:

Secure start will be mandatory from 1 May 2024

2022-04-20

Secure start makes telephone fraud more difficult.

Telephone fraud is a major problem today. Fraudsters connect to e-services, enter the victim’s
personal identity number and call to trick the victim into using BankID.

Secure start verifies that the same person using the e-service identifies with BankID. In this way, telephone fraud is made more difficult. The majority of frauds where BankID is used occur in e-services where Secure start of BankID is not used.

Mandatory from 1 May 2024

To protect both users and e-services, Secure start of BankID becomes mandatory for all authorities, companies and organizations that use BankID in their e-services. The latest date for having the solution in place is 1 May 2024. Instructions and advice are available on our website.

What Secure Start means

Secure start means that all BankID transactions, for all e-services, need to be started with:

  • Autostart when the e-service and BankID are used on the same device, or

  • Animated QR code when the e-service and BankID are used on separate devices.

Today, several e-services use static QR codes, but to meet the new requirements, an animated QR code is required.

Solution for telephony services coming soon

Finansiell ID-Teknik will develop a solution for telephony services where autostart or QR code cannot be used. More information will come later. E-services will be given at least one year for any adjustments in their telephony services.

Positive customer experience and safer service

There are many benefits in implementing Secure start, partly a higher security for users of all services and partly a greater difficulty for fraudsters to use BankID. This will also curb improper and unsafe use.

Users get a better customer experience with easier use and start-up of BankID as well as a more uniform experience. In addition, the user's personal identity number will be less exposed.
